Chocolatiers of the High Winds by H.B. Kurtzwilde
A gay steampunk adventure. Follow the weekly travails of young Mayport Titus, and his intercontinental airship journey to restore the fortunes of the Titus Chocolate Company.
Chapter 19: Homegoing
Mayport lay in his bunk, aching all over but very merry. His collection of cuts and bruises were mere decoration compared to his left arm. A splinter twice as long and wide as his finger had pierced his shoulder. He hadn’t noticed it much until it was gone, yanked out by the coldly practical Cully.
Two of the crew had died. One hanged in the rigging and the other broken by a plummet to the engineering deck. Another lay moaning of burns that seemed determined to kill him at last. Mayport tended his own wound and showed proudly to himself that all his fingers still moved. Beyond his own nursing, his good hand was chiefly occupied with the rum bottle.
He had been relieved of his office and returned to the rank of passenger where he belonged. A better man for the job was called up from the crew, and seemed grateful for the advancement. He gave tender care to Mayport’s cargo. As cargo himself, Mayport could only be grateful.
