Microfiction: Gemini, by Rian Darcy

Gemini
by Rian Darcy

They were twins, in a manner of speaking. They had the same blonde hair, the same cupid’s bow mouths, and the same tiny birthmarks on their left wrists. They loved white wine, red meat, and dark-haired men, and their nightly routine involved all three whenever they could get away with it.

They had never met in real life.

Sienne had memorized the taste of Avi’s skin and the shape of her hips, but she didn’t know Avi’s real name or whether or not Avi was even female in the world outside their cyberspace playground. Sometimes it bothered her that they knew so little about each other. Most of the time, it didn’t. Online, they were everything they’d ever wanted to be, and that was all that mattered.

“We should meet,” Avi whispered one night.

They were lying together on a satin-draped bed in a darkened forest. Sienne had created this space for them, a little kingdom of dancing fireflies and velvety ferns to rule over with Avi as her queen. The air was damp with mist, and Sienne’s sheer dress was clinging to her skin where Avi had been tonguing her nipples through the fabric. One of Avi’s hands was underneath her skirt, between her legs, with one finger slowly rubbing her clit. Sienne was nearly incoherent with want.

“Outside, offline.” Avi dragged her tongue over Sienne’s nipple before biting down just hard enough to hurt. “Meet me. I want to know who you are.”

“You know who I am.” Sienne’s reply trailed off into a moan as two of Avi’s fingers slid into her body.

“No, I don’t,” said Avi. “I know this–” she curled her fingers “–and I know this–” she kissed the hollow of Sienne’s throat “–but I don’t know you.”

This was one of the most honest things Sienne had ever done, but she couldn’t catch her breath to say so out loud because Avi’s fingers were driving her closer to orgasm with every second. When she came just minutes later, it was with Avi’s mouth covering hers and her fingers gripping Avi’s arm, and for a few moments, the world was so agonizingly perfect it brought tears to her eyes.

“You’ll never agree to meet me, will you?” Avi asked once Sienne’s muscles had stopped trembling.

Sienne lay with her face turned away, staring at the fireflies swaying in the darkness. The sweat was cooling on her skin, and when Avi wrapped an arm around her waist to pull her closer, she burrowed back against the warmth of Avi’s body.

“Do you love me?” Avi whispered against Sienne’s ear.

Sienne rolled onto her back and gazed up at Avi’s face, at her porcelain doll lips and fine blonde eyelashes. “Yes.”

The smile that Avi gave her in return was one of the most beautiful things she’d ever seen, and when Avi leaned in to press a line of kisses down the front of her throat, Sienne tipped her head back to gaze up at the sky. Gemini shimmered through the treetops.
