Chapter 34: Duty

Mayport started his day in a fine mood. He felt as full of merry tunes as Thiervy’s crazy chocolate still. The sound of it going full tilt made him stop at the storeroom first, to be sure of their supply. With very little help from Mayport, a thin but steady trade in the stuff had become reliable.

His next important appointment took him out of the neighborhood and past his barber, though he longed to stop for a smoke. Further down the row, a Turkish fellow had fought a battle to revive his mamma’s coffee, and liked Thiervy’s machine well enough to pay money. Mayport stepped into the shop, breathed deep, and understood how the broad-smiling fellow had acquired such wealth.

He was met at the door with a cup of the legendary coffee, but the smile was not in place. “I don’t mean to worry you, but I’ve been worried myself.”
