Chocolatiers of the High Winds by H.B. Kurtzwilde
A gay steampunk adventure. Follow the weekly travails of young Mayport Titus, and his intercontinental airship journey to restore the fortunes of the Titus Chocolate Company.
Chapter 28: Hypocrisy
Mayport woke slowly, stretching his toes out to test the weather beyond the covers. The coming of spring made rising an uncertain thing. He might have met a humid morning, or a river of half frozen mud, depending on how the winds blew.
The kitchen below him was quiet. Missus Stevens had been persuaded to keep Sunday for herself. She had bragged of the privilege to other ladies of her profession. He gave her no reason to think he was generous out of purely selfish motivations.
He rose and dressed for Sunday services. Thiervy was already in the kitchen raiding the broken meats when Mayport came to get his share. “You look like a young man going courting.”
“Am I not?” Mayport asked. “I shall walk with you to church and sit beside you as well. Your family knows all about me and have encouraged me in their own way. Do you refuse to be escorted?”
